Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breast by inserting implants to increase her bustline. A Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is the surgical raising and reshaping of the breasts to improve their appearance, which may have been adversely affected by pregnancy, nursing, or simply aging.
Boston Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Leonard Miller helps women achieve their breast augmentation goals, while maintaining a natural look.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
Mentor Corporation has done a very thorough safety evaluation of both saline-filled breast implants and gel-filled breast implants. In addition to their own testing, Mentor has sponsored other leading-edge tests performed at top academic institutions. These clinical studies are of more than 200,000 women with silicone gel-filled breast implants.
Mentor also has conducted extensive investigations of saline-filled breast implants involving nearly 5,000 patients. The general objective of these studies was to gather information about the safety and effectiveness of breast implants. Mentor silicone gel and saline breast implants have received PMA (pre-market application) approval from the FDA. Mentor remains committed to providing the public with objective information about breast implant safety.
Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants
When choosing the best breast implant type, it’s important for our Boston patients to first have an idea of their desired results. There are differences between silicone gel breast implants and saline-filled breast implants, but one isn’t always better than the other.
If it is important to you that your breast implants feel natural, then you will want to consider gel breast implants like the MemoryGel® breast implants. Many of Dr. Miller’s Boston patients prefer MemoryGel breast implants because they feature a highly unique “cohesive” gel filling that holds together in a uniform manner. This means breast implants will retain a look and feel that resembles natural breast tissue, and patients will experience no leakage even if the shell ruptures. This is particularly beneficial for women who are physically active.
Saline-filled breast implants are filled with saltwater solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up most of the human body. They have a firmer feel than gel, and your surgeon can adjust their fill volume during your procedure. Since saline implants are inserted empty before they are filled, they can be placed in your chest through a slightly smaller incision.
THE BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE
The method of inserting and positioning your breast implants will depend on your anatomy, preferences, and Boston Plastic Surgeon Dr. Miller’s recommendation. Working through an incision, Dr. Miller lifts the breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle. The operation usually takes about 2-3 hours and can be performed with a local anesthetic and monitored intravenous sedation.
THE BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE
Breast lifts (or mastopexys) are usually performed under a local anesthetic with intravenous sedation and take approximately 3 hours for both breasts. There are many techniques available, but Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Miller commonly uses a crescent-shaped incision that follows the natural contour of the breast. The incision defines the area from which breast skin will be removed and determines the new location of the nipple. Dr. Miller will remove the excess skin and moves the nipple and areola up to the higher position. The skin around the areola is then trimmed and drawn together to reshape the breast. Other incision patterns may be more suitable for your treatment and Dr. Miller will discuss your alternatives. Often times patients will have a breast implant inserted along with their breast lift to increase their size, which is placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper under the muscle of the chest wall.
Nearly all Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift surgeries at the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation are performed in Dr. Miller’s fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical suite at our Brookline office. If patients prefer general anesthetic, either procedure can be performed at one of Dr. Miller’s affiliated hospitals in the Greater Boston Area.
BREAST AUGMENTATION/LIFT RECOVERY
Most patients who receive breast implants can return to work within a few days. Heavy lifting and strenuous workout routines should be avoided for a period of 1 month. Within 1 week after surgery most pain has subsided.
Breast Lift patients are up and about in a day or two, but do not return to work for a week or more. Patients will need to wear a special support bra around the clock for three to four weeks.
BREAST AUGMENTATION/LIFT SURGERY RESULTS
Patients of Breast Augmentation/Lift Surgery with Dr. Miller are very happy with the results and many return to the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation for other services like Botox®,medical facials, and advanced laser treatments.
HOW MUCH DOES BREAST AUGMENTATION/LIFT SURGERY COST?
Depending on the size and type of implant a patient chooses or the extensiveness of the surgical lift procedure, the costs associated with a Breast Augmentation Surgery or Breast Lift Surgery can vary. Other factors that impact the cost are the surgical fee, facility fee, medication expenses, post surgical garments, and anesthesia fee. While we do not accept any form of insurance, if your procedure can be covered by your insurance company, Dr. Miller will gladly refer you to the appropriate plastic surgeon whose office does accept insurance.
