An Abdominoplasty Tummy Tuck is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the upper and lower abdomen and tightens the underlying muscle yielding a flatter abdomen. It is most popular with our Boston patients who have been pregnant multiple times (as part of a “Mommy Makeover”), those who have lost a large amount of weight, and patients with an excess of loose fat or skin in the abdominal area. The result is a younger-looking shape with little to no lower abdominal bulge, and of course, increased confidence.
A complete Abdominoplasty Tummy Tuck usually takes 2-3 hours. Dr. Miller will typically make a curved incision across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area. A second small incision is usually made to the navel from surrounding tissue. Dr. Miller then separates the skin from the abdominal wall and lifts a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. These muscles are then pulled together and stitched into a new position so that they are tighter. This provides a firmer abdominal wall and narrows the waistline. The skin flap is then pulled down and surplus skin is removed. A new hole is cut for your navel, which is then stitched into place. With partial abdominoplasty, the incision is much shorter and the navel incision may not be required. Muscle tightening is not always necessarily performed. We also offer mini tummy tucks which only takes an hour or two to perform.
Abdominoplasty / Tummy Tuck surgeries are performed in Dr. Miller’s fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical suite at our Brookline office or in the hospital depending on each client and their desired results.
After the procedure is completed, you will need to wear a compression garment for 2-6 weeks to hold in your abdominal muscles until they fully heal into their new location. Some drain tubes will be left in place after the surgery and removed by Dr. Miller the following week at one of his Boston surgical offices. Swelling tends to peak at around day 3, and most swelling will be gone in 2-3 weeks. It is best to refrain from strenuous exercise and avoid lifting heavy objects for several weeks. Some patients have returned to work after only a week, while most patients wait two weeks.
Patients of Abdominoplasty Tummy Tuck Surgery with Dr. Miller are very happy with the results and many return to the Boston Center for Facial Rejuvenation for other services like Botox®, medical facials, and advanced laser treatments.
HOW MUCH DOES ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY COST?
The costs associated with a Tummy Tuck vary depending on how extensive a procedure a patient needs. Other factors also impact the cost like the surgical fee, facility fee, medication expenses, post surgical garments, and anesthesia fee. While we do not accept any form of insurance, if your procedure can be covered by your insurance company, Dr. Miller will gladly refer you to the appropriate plastic surgeon whose office does accept insurance.
